Importance of Skin Cancer Screenings
Skin cancer screenings are an essential part of healthcare and should be included in your healthcare routine. Through these screenings, your doctor can detect early warning signs of melanoma and other skin cancers. Left unchecked, melanoma can be deadly. Detected early enough, however, it’s fairly easy to treat. We offer full body skin cancer screenings at our Skin Cancer Clinic.
What to Expect from a Skin Cancer Screening
Skin cancer screenings entail having your entire body checked by a skin cancer specialist for skin cancer. Your doctor will be on the lookout for unusual spots, moles or growths that could be cancerous or could turn cancerous in the future. Changes in the size, shape, color or texture of an existing mole or growth could be indicative of cancer. If you have suspicions about any growths, moles or spots on your body, bring them to your dermatologist’s attention at the time of your screening so we can verify that they’re cancer-free.
If your doctor uncovers suspicious spots, moles or growths, they will be photographed for your medical records and a biopsy will be performed to determine if these spots or growths are cancerous. A biopsy is the removal of skin tissue for evaluation. Your doctor will clean and numb the area and gently cut off skin tissue to be tested for cancerous cells. For your convenience, this entire process can be completed in our Cancer Skin Clinic. If the test results are positive, your doctor will explain options for treatment.
Importance of Skin Checks for Cancer
Without routine skin checks from a professional skin cancer specialist/dermatologist, it can be difficult to detect signs of melanoma or other forms of skin cancer. UV rays from the sun are a major cause of melanoma, making Australia a prime target for melanoma victims. By scheduling annual or biannual skin cancer screenings, you can protect yourself from this potentially deadly disease.
